The Met Office Unified model is used for all atmospheric, oceanic and climate research and operational needs, including daily weather forecasting and climate runs over thousands of years of simulation. Many academic groups also use this model for research simulations. The data from this model is produced in so called pp format which is a binary format suitable for dense storage and for restarting model integrations but is not very suitable for exploring the data through data analysis and visualisation tools.

This exploratory project is to determine whether the BinX language could be used to describe pp format Met Office data files in such a way as to allow direct analysis and exploration of the pp files without converting them to more standard formats such as Netcdf.
