Background

EDINA is a JISC-funded national datacentre, based at the Edinburgh University Data Library . The group provides networked access to data, information and research resources to the UK education and research community.

Numerous information services are provided such journal articles and abstracts in the life sciences, agriculture, forestry, health, nutrition and chemistry. EDINA is also a major provider of UK Ordnance Survey Map Data. Maps can be downloaded from EDINA’s Digimap service for subsequent processing by a Geographic Information System (GIS) on a client machine. Digimap also provides advanced cartographic services such as user-defined scaling of maps, combining maps, and advance searching based on place names and feature names.

Digimap service interfaces are conformant with the Open GIS Consortium (OGC) Web Map Specification.

Project Goals

This project aspires to make Digimap services available to grid users. As well as delivering maps, the project would like to deliver geographic feature sets, which are one-dimensional and two-dimensional objects occupying a selected spatial region. In the future, Digimap services should be available for incorporation into a large grid-based workflow involving mining and analysis of geographic data.

Project Status

This project is currently in the planning phase. General project goals have been defined. We are investigating an example grid application that will request data from the Digimap service, perform value-added analysis and deliver results to a grid client.
