Promoting Research Collaborations
EPCC (Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre) has been at the forefront of novel computing, and in particular High Performance Computing (HPC), for over 15 years now. In that time we have successfully carried out many national and international research projects in many areas of science and industry. We are currently embarking on a phase of expanding our research collaborations are looking for researchers who are in need of help in exploiting novel computing to do new science.
Novel computing opens up new methods of scientific research that would be impossible with more traditional techniques. For example, using large parallel computers we are able to simulate the very small, such as quarks and sub-atomic particles, and the very big, such as the Earth or the whole Universe. Many researchers now use computing in their research. This can be anything from analysing a database of results, using an existing numerical model or even writing their own code to generate, analyse or process data. Any of these activities could potentially use an aspect of novel computing to increase understanding. Moreover, some researchers may want to develop some computer code, but lack the time, experience or resources to do so.
Our aim is to set up collaborations using a range of methods, from co-supervision of MSc students to joint research grant proposals. One method of starting collaborations is through edikt. As part of edikt phase 2 we will promote the use of novel computing in the University of Edinburgh by giving talks to research groups around the University. You can download a version of this talk from this website.
If you think you could benefit from using novel computing in your research please contact Terry Sloan ( t.sloan@epcc.ed.ac.uk ) or Lorna Smith ( l.smith@epcc.ed.ac.uk ) to discuss your ideas.
