How to connect to the clusters

This document provides a step-by-step guide to connecting to and transferring files to/from the cluster from a Windows machine. It is assumed that you are using the Windows SSH Client.

Connecting to the Clusters

The clusters are enabled for Secure Shell (SSH) access only. The following instructions assume that you are using the Secure Shell Client for Windows. If you prefer, you could also use eXceed, cygwin or PuTTY to connect to the clusters.

  1. Start the Secure Shell Client.
  2. Click the "Quick Connect" button and enter the hostname and your username in the dialog that appears - here I have entered hare and my username:

    ssh_help1

  3. Click connect and answer yes to save the host key on your computer.
  4. Enter your password at the prompt and you should have access. If you wish you can save the connection as a profile to save you typing the host name and your username each time you want to log in.

    ssh_help2

  5. Once you have finished, type "exit" to logout.

File Transfer to/from the clusters

These instructions assume that you are using the SSH Client for Windows.

  1. Start the Secure File Transfer Client or click the File Transfer button on an already open SSH Client window.
    1. If starting a new Secure File Transfer Client, click the "Quick Connect" button and enter the hostname and your username in the dialog that appears - here I have entered hare and my username:
  2. Click connect and answer yes to save the host key on your computer.
  3. Enter your password at the prompt and you should have access. If you wish you can save the connection as a profile to save you typing the host name and your username each time you want to log in.

    ssh_help3

  5. Once you have finished click the "disconnect" button ssh_disconnect to end the session.
