Introduction

The Animal Behaviour Monitoring Project is a new initiative being set up in collaboration with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, the charity that owns and manages Edinburgh Zoo, and the Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig, near Aviemore. A key research activity of the Edinburgh based RZSS team focuses on monitoring the behaviour of primates in their social environment, with an aim to more fully understand behavioural characteristics in social groupings, and also to determine at an early stage any unusual behavioural patterns that arise within these complex societies. With the help of Edikt2, EPCC is investigating methods of automatically classifying and collating observations of initially primates, but also of other species, in a joint attempt to both enable the collection of larger quantities of reliable data, and to engage members of the public and education communities.
